He has devoted his entire adult life to teaching and playing music, including a decade doing music therapy with children with Autism at Giant Steps School in Montreal. Ian is currently teaching music full time with the English Montreal School Board.

Ian has played professionally in many contexts and styles since his days as a student. He was guitarist in a jazz trio led by Maurice “Reez” Soudre that performed every Friday and Saturday night for three years (97-2000) at “La Faim du Monde” Restaurant in Ste.Adele, Quebec. He performed regularly with his (now ex) wife (Biz Oliver) and as a solo act in clubs and cafes across Canada. He has appeared at Many local music festivals including Le Festival Internationale de Jazz de Montreal, Festival Transformation, Wild Roots Folk Festival.

All of his life, since picking up the guitar Ian has been writing and performing in the singer/songwriter tradition. His extensive repertoire ranges from Jazz Standards of the thirties, forties and fifties through the great singer/songwriters (Dylan, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell…..) up to more recent artists (Iron and Wine, Eleni Mandel….) not to mention dozens of Blues, Soul and Rock standards and of course, his original songs (now numbering more than a hundred).

His first CD under his own name “First Love” was produced in 1995. Ian wrote all of the (instrumental) music for Jazz sextet and quintet and describes it as “Jazz for people who think they don’t like Jazz”.

“Boy Blue” his second CD, but his first to feature his voice and lyric writing, is an album of ten original songs and three “covers” that explore the human condition from a very personal and stylized point of view.

“New Life” is a collection of original work that documents changes in his life and melds his passion for both words and music in a lively fusion of tunes that are at once, rootsy and jazzy, driving or wistful. Ian’s recordings are available on Ionyx Records via the artist’s website http://ianhanchet.com/ ………. or on CDBaby, ITunes.

Ian’s newest release is coming in late spring of 2017, tentatively titled "Dealin From The Bottom". A collection of Bob Dylan songs decated in loving memory of his dear friend "Dannny Lewis"
